The University of Rochester
Location: Rochester, NY
Year Established: 1850
Student population: 10,500

The University of Rochester is one of the top-tier research universities in the USA. More than 200 academic majors are taught in 158 buildings by more than 2,000 faculty and instructional staff. The mission statement at the University of Rochester is: Learn, Discover, Heal, Create—and Make the World Ever Better.

The University of Rochester is a major centre for various fields of research, consistently ranking among the top 40 US colleges and universities in federally financed science, engineering, medical, and other research. Standout programs include the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, a laser-based nuclear fusion facility, as well as new programs in biomedical engineering and optics, a cancer stem cell program and a Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute. The Eastman School of Music is ranked among the best music schools in the world.

Unique characteristics
Learning at the University of Rochester is on a very personal scale. Rochester remains one of the smallest and most collegiate among top research universities, with smaller classes, a low 10:1 student to teacher ratio, and increased interactions with faculty. Founded as “an institution of the highest order” and guided by the motto Meliora or Ever Better, the University of Rochester boasts eight Nobel Prize winners and twelve Puiltzer Prize winners among its faculty and alumni.

Located in upstate New York, on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, Rochester is well located just 3 hours drive from Toronto and 5 hours from New York City. With more than a million people living in the metropolitan area and surrounding suburbs, Rochester has the entertainment and culture of a big city, but the friendliness (and lack of traffic) of a small town. Rochester has world renowned jazz and film festivals, professional sports events, independent theatres, museums, parks, as well as one-of-a-kind restaurants and shops.
