The largest university in Europe and the oldest in Rome, Università degli Studi di Roma La Sapienza (Sapienza University of Rome) has played an important role in the history of Italy and Europe as a whole. Its main campus is a city within a city close to the centre of Rome, and offers a network of 21 museums and 59 libraries.

The sheer size of the university, with 140,000 students and over 4,200 professors, makes it a unique academic environment. Through its history it’s hosted the likes of Giuseppe Ungaretti, Gabriele D'Annunzio and Bernardo Bertolucci. Today it offers a vast knowledge community, attracting international students from all over the world. There are excellent student services.
Unique characteristics
The University offers a vast array of courses including 290 degree programs, over 74 PhD courses and 200 professional courses. It carries out outstanding scientific research which is recognised internationally. The famous Faculty of Philosophy, Arts, Humanities and Oriental Studies has hosted some of the great Italian masters in the humanities and offers a wide range of programs. The Department of Philosophy is situated in a beautiful, historic building and the Italian Institute of Oriental Studies is one of the most important centres in Italy for the study of Chinese, Indian and other Asian cultures and languages.
Rome is one of the world’s most exciting cities. Home of the Colosseum, the Vatican and St Peter’s Basilica, its streets are full of Michelangelo sculptures, Caravaggio paintings and Bernini fountains. As in all Italian cities, life seems to revolve around food and you’ll find hundreds of pizzerias, trattorias and restaurants.
