About

Purdue University

Location: West Lafayette, IN
Year Established: 1869
Student population: 38,800 (9,000 international students)

About
Purdue University, named after benefactor John Purdue, provides a quality, affordable education and is one of America’s leading research institutions. It’s renowned for science, agriculture, engineering and business and consistently ranks highly in national and international rankings. Its alumni include more than 22 astronauts, the chief engineer of the Hoover Dam and the inventor of fiberglass as well as several Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winners.

Highlights
As a large university, Purdue offers a busy student life with athletics, nearly 1,000 student clubs and organisations, galleries, performances and various fraternities and sororities. On Fridays you can ride for free on the Boilermaker Special, the university’s mascot that resembles a Victorian era railroad locomotive.

Unique characteristics
There’s plenty of academic choice, with more than 500 undergraduate majors and specialisations. There are 10 schools and colleges - Agriculture, Education, Engineering, Health and Human Sciences, Liberal Arts, Management, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Science, Technology, and Veterinary Medicine.

Location
You get two cities for the price of one at Purdue: the university is located in West Lafayette, which is divided from the neighbouring city of Lafayette by the Wabash River. Set in slow-paced, Amish-filled Indiana, West Lafayette offers beautiful historic architecture, quaint antique and curiosity shops, the Tippecanoe Battlefield and Museum and Prophetstown State Park. There are a number of galleries, an annual, free music festival and several breweries and wineries.

Host City Highlights
West Lafayette (where Purdue is located) is about 2 hours bus away from Chicago. In Chicago you could go to the Shedd Aquarium, Skydeck Chicago, The Field Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, Art Institute of Chicago etc.

Uni Life
Most students are highly involved in different kinds of societies, and there are many opportunities to meet new friends. Relevant emails will be sent to your university email.

Study
For civil engineering, there are lectures and labs each week, and they assess students through assignments, midterm exam and final exams. Almost every course has 2 mid-term exams and one final exam which worth about 80%.

Cuisine
There are more than 5 big dining hall under each dorm with different menu each day, and the food there is awesome, there are also Chinese, Japanese and Italian restaurants around campus.

Housing
There are 2 people shared dorm, single dorm, and you can also live off campus. I suggest staying in a 2 people dorm so that you can make American friends.

Money Matters
That working rate was about 7-9 USD/hour, and I personally don't suggest working during the exchange program, because most of the time your time is more valuable than the income. Spend your time on studying, socializing or traveling.

Travel
Normally there is a mid-term break (1 week) and you can travel around US during that time.

Getting Around
About 30 dollars to travel to another near city, all buses are free for Purdue students, and there are campus buses going around campus between 6am - 5 pm on weekdays.

Top Tips
Do not go there too early before a semester begins, especially for spring semester, its extremely cold (about -20 degree all the time) and there is almost no students and activities, dining courts and most restaurants are closed.
