About

University of Georgia
Location: Athens, GA
Year Established: 1785
Student population: 35,200

About
The founder of the American system of public higher education, the University of Georgia (UGA) is a comprehensive and diverse university. It’s known for the quality of its students, more of whom win scholarships than at other universities, and for its research, which specialises in agriculture, biology and biotechnology and well as health, biomedicine and veterinary science.

Highlights
The picturesque campus is located about 110 km from Atlanta, in the Appalachian foothills. It contains many historic buildings and a famous Arch, which, according to legend, no student should pass under until he or she has received a diploma from UGA. There’s a great library and art museum, countless student activities, and a writing centre. The Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication administers the Peabody Awards, a famous awards program for the electronic media.

Unique characteristics
UGA offers professional degrees in the arts, humanities, social sciences, biological sciences, physical sciences, agricultural and environmental sciences, business, ecology, engineering, environmental design, family and consumer sciences, forest resources, journalism and mass communication, education, law, pharmacy, public health, social work, and veterinary medicine.

Location
Athens is a laid back college town with pleasant streets, plenty of drinking venues and shopping, all within easy walking distance. It’s famous for its football team, the University of Georgia Bulldogs, and its music scene – it has launched artists including the B-52s and REM.

Host City Highlights
Downtown Athens; the nightlife is crazy! The music and cultural scene is great, with top bands playing at the Georgia Theatre, 40 Watt's etc. all the time.

Uni Life
There are hundreds of clubs and societies. Everybody is super friendly and welcoming. They absolutely love Australians!

Study
12 hours per week, smaller classes and the workload is easier.

Cuisine
Dining hall food was actually really good. Check out Cali n' Tito's for the best cheap Cuban food.

Housing
I lived on campus and off-campus. On-campus is great for when you first get here as you live with around 50 other international students and it is right on campus next to the gym and dining hall. Don't worry you have total freedom on campus! If you want a cheaper alternative you can live off-campus, check out - "UGA/Athens Lease/Sublease" Facebook page for 6 month leases!

Money Matters
I came over with $10,000 and I also had youth allowance while I was over here. That was a perfect amount that allowed me to experience Athens, Spring Break and other areas in the South to the fullest!

Getting Around
The UGA bus system is really comprehensive and you never need to worry about having a car. If you do need a car to visit Walmart etc. there are plenty of friendly people that will take you.

Travels
If you are here in the Spring Semester make sure you go and do a classic American spring break - Gulf Shores, Alabama or Panama City Beach.

If you are here in the Fall Semester the one weekend you can't miss is Georgia Florida - Frat Beach. Where everyone goes down to Florida for a massive party on the beach and to watch a football game.

Top Tips
Immerse yourself in all areas of Athens. It is a one of a kind town and it has so much to offer and so many secret little gems. One of the best decisions I ever made coming over here!
