University of Science and Technology of China (USTC)

The University of Science and Technology of China is a national research university in Hefei that comes under the direct leadership of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Its mission is to focus on frontier areas of science and technology and educate top leaders in science and technology for China and the world.
USTC was set up by the government to meet China’s science and technology needs and to increase the country’s international competitiveness. Its establishment was hailed as “a great event in the history of education and science in China.” USTC is one of the most important innovation centres in China. It has 12 schools and 27 departments, all focused in the science and technology fields with 43 PhD programs.
Unique Characteristics
USTC is one of the few Chinese Universities to have a special “Class for the Gifted Young”, as well as a special Software School and three national research institutions. It also has several key scientific research institutions, including the CAS Research Centre for Thermal Safety Engineering and Technology.
Hefei is the capital city of the Anhui Province. It is the key tourist city of the province and is most well-known for its brilliant Anhui culture. It has a rather extreme climate with temperatures plunging to minus 20 degrees Celsius in winter to 40 degrees Celsius in summer. As with most large cities in China, there is a huge range of delicious and authentic cheap food and beer.
