Student Experiences

Sarah Segal
Master of Commerce, Semester 2, 2015

Uni Life
The campus is located quite far out of the city (1.5 hours) so it’s not exactly Paris. Living on campus did provide a communal atmosphere and great opportunities to be social but it was quite difficult to get to know local students.

I took 5 courses – 4 worth 3ECTS and 1 worth 6 ECTS. Each was about 1 class per week (3hr long lecture), so about 15 contact hours per week. Assessments were group presentations, individual assignments and class participation. I also found I had to do a lot more additional study to supplement classes – I found books on some of my subjects and read them in addition to attending lectures where my professors were not particularly engaging. I would absolutely recommend Wine Marketing and the french language course.

I stayed in on campus housing because it was really convenient for going to events on campus and talking to neighbours. While it was clean, there were no appliances or place to cook.

Money Matters
The bank I went with was BNP Paribas, and I transferred funds with Transfer Wise. I would recommend trying to get a french phone before registering with a bank as they’ll require it for your card verification when purchasing online. I spent about 800 Euros a month, including food/rent and transport. As far as entertainment goes, there’s not much on offer in Jouy and HEC provides all of your academic materials. If you want to save money, definitely eat at the university cafeteria and apply for the CAF (French housing assistance).

Getting Around
It’s about 5 euros to get to Paris by train.

I travelled to Portugal, England, Spain and Italy – mostly via train or air. It was quite affordable if you booked in advance but my travel plans were really spontaneous and coordinated with people I met while on exchange. If you can get your hands on a car I would recommend Lisbon, Amalfi Coast and Tuscany to keep warm and travel with friends!

Top Tips
I definitely wish I had known exactly how far out HEC was from Paris - it takes about 1.5 hr to get there if you don’t have a car.
