Program Description
This course will give participants the opportunity to study Spanish language, Tropical Ecology or Tropical Marine Biology, whilst being immersed in the vibrant culture of San Jose. Costa Rica is one of the most stunning and biodiverse countries in the world.
You will live with a local ‘Tico’ (Costa Rican) family, who will feed and look after you. Students are encouraged to explore the vibrant urban environment of San Jose and travel to other areas nearby.

Local Overview
Costa Rica means ‘rich coast’ in Spanish. It is a country situated in Central America, adjacent to Nicaragua, Panama, the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
Costa Rica boasts a rich variety of flora and fauna, containing 5% of the globe’s biodiversity. Approximately a quarter of the country’s territory is protected national parks – the largest percentage of protected regions in the world.
Costa Rica’s small population of 4.3 million are widely considered to be warm and relaxed. Although Costa Rica’s official language is Spanish, a large number of its citizens are bilingual.
Renowned for its stunning weather, Costa Rica has something to offer to everyone, from white-water rafting to local theatres. Everything is easily accessible by public transport.

This programme enables participants to fully immerse themselves in the local culture and lifestyle through a host family. Students will have a private room with towels, linen and pillows.
There will be access to cooking facilities and a laundry. Breakfast and dinner are provided by the host family – the perfect opportunity to discover Tico cooking!
Host families typically live within walking distance of the campus and within close proximity to public transport.

Host institution
The University Veritas is located in San Jose, the cultural hub of Costa Rica, renowned for its National Theatre, busy market life and accessible public transport. San Jose boasts many international restaurants, ranging from Lebanese to Italian, in additional to local cuisine. After class, students have the opportunity to explore the many local theatres, concert venues, cinemas and salsa clubs. 


Program Fee: $4,999-6,899 AUS

OS-HELP loans may be available to eligible students enrolled in a Commonwealth supported place, where the program is approved for credit prior to departure. Application required. 

How to Apply

Applications for January 2018 are now open!
To apply to this program you need to submit an application to Sydney Abroad and CIS Australia. The Sydney Abroad application will provide you with the ability to apply for academic credit towards your University of Sydney course. The CIS Australia website provide the course syllabus, which you will need to request approval from your faculty to receive academic credit towards your University course. When you click on the link to apply to CIS Australia, read through the instructions and submit a 'Study Abroad Application'. 

CIS Australia have the final decision on whether you are accepted to participate in this program, however your faculty have the final decision on whether you are able to receive academic credit for this program. It is not a requirement of CIS Australia programs that you are approved to receive academic credit.
