Program description The Mediterranean Basin: This course builds visual literacy in the history of art and archaeology as well as philosophical literature from the Mediterranean Basin from Antiquity to the Middle Ages. It cultivates strong research and critical thinking skills and develops students’ abilities to synthesise cultural, historical, political and social information as it relates to the visual arts. The academic component consists of a series of site visits and on-site studies made by academic experts from IAU in addition to local guides and experts in the field of history, art history and archaeology. Students in the various sections of the course will attend the same meetings but will have different syllabi for readings, papers, discussions and examinations.
This program offers students with a choice of one of five subjects to suit a range of interests, including areas of ancient and medieval art, architecture and history; Greek and Roman archaeology; as well as cultural and religious studies in Europe (each student will take one course during the program.

Eligibility criteria To qualify students must be in good academic standing with a GPA of 4.5 (out of 7) or equivalent. If your current GPA falls below the requirement please contact us to discuss your situation. We will do what we can to find the right program for you.
As part of your application you will complete a CISaustralia Course Selection Worksheet. The instructions provided will assist you through the steps involved in selecting your courses.

Credit/Not-for-credit Please contact your faculty office with the below form to submit an application for credit. Participation in any CIS Australia program does not guarantee credit and will require faculty assessment of individual applications-for-credit.

Explore and learn from some of the Mediterranean's most scenic and cultural sites: Pont du Gard, Glanum, and Arles in France; Florence, Pisa, Rome, Naples and Pompeii in Italy; and Athens, Mycenia, Olympia and Delphi in Greece. History, the arts, religion and archaeology will be the main academic focus and there will be fellow students, local guides and experts in the field to share their knowledge.
