About

Tohoku University

Location: Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture
Year Established: 1907
Student Population: 17,800 (1,300 international students)
University Ranking: 165

About
Tohoku University is the third oldest Imperial University in Japan and among the National Seven. It is considered to be one of the most prestigious universities in Japan.

Highlights
Tohoku has 10 colleges within the university, including 15 departments with graduate students. Its three core values are “Research First”, “Open Door” and “Practice-Oriented Research and Education.”

Unique Characteristics
In 2009, the University was one of 13 chosen by the government to lead the internationalisation of higher education in Japan. The venture, known as the “Global 30 Project”, introduced new international degree courses taught entirely in English at both undergraduate and graduate level. At Tohoku, this has become known as the Future Global Leadership Program (FGL).

Location
Sendai is regarded as the nightlife capital of northern Japan. It is a compact city with well-ordered tree-lined streets that front a ruined castle. The vibrant city centre is far enough inland to have been spared from the devastating 2011 tsunami, but some of its coastal suburbs were severely damaged. The city is host to some of Japan’s most famous festivals.
