Bezalel Academy of Art and Design

Location: Jerusalem
Year Established: 1906
Student population: 2,100
Originally established by artist Boris Schatz, Bezalel Academy of Art and Design is a prestigious art school known for its innovation and academic excellence. It’s at the forefront of Israel’s art, design and architecture and has helped shape the country’s cultural identity.
Bezalel is building a new, architecturally-designed campus in the heart of Jerusalem, due to open in 2017, that will contain classrooms, studios, two auditoriums and workshops. Students are actively involved in the community.
Unique characteristics
Courses span Fine Arts, Screen Based Arts, Architecture, Ceramics and Glass Design, Industrial Design, Jewellery and Fashion Design, Photography and Visual Communication. There are graduate courses in Fine Arts, Urban Design, Industrial Design and Policy and Theory of the Arts. Students are taught the practice of their field and also gain an intellectual foundation in history, literature and philosophy, social studies and the basics of scientific and technological thought.
Jerusalem is a centre of world religion and is one of the holiest cities for Jews, Christians and Muslims. The Old City is a must-see pilgrimage destination, full of sacred buildings and religious relics where you can touch the stones that prophets, kings and crusaders touched thousands of years ago. With all the exotic attractions of the Middle East, including souks and spice markets, Jerusalem also offers modern dining and nightlife as well as the incredible Israel Museum and Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial.
