Location: Munich

Student population: 50,000
One of Europe’s leading research universities in the heart of Munich, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) has been attracting the best and brightest academics and scholars for more than 500 years, including the poet Bertolt Brecht and physicist Max Planck. It is a recognised "University of Excellence" and offers a broad spectrum of subjects across all disciplines.

LMU has a strong research focus and research influences teaching at all levels. It offers internationally renowned academics, a diverse student population from more than 130 countries, and a full range of extra-curricular activities including an orchestra, acting, debating and sport. The academic environment values a critical awareness of history – it was in Munich that the Weisse Rose student group flourished in its opposition to Nazism.

Unique characteristics
The University offers a huge range of subjects from the humanities and cultural studies to law, economics, social sciences and medicine and natural sciences. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is the only university veterinary training and research institution in southern Germany and offers an extensive curriculum including basic science to veterinary public health.
Germany’s second city, Munich is a major German science and technology centre. There are many universities and research institutions, famous libraries and museums, and a wide range of activities for people from all over the world. There are numerous world-class sights in this Bavarian city, it’s close to the Alps, and Oktoberfest is a major tourist draw card.

Host City Highlights
Spending time in the English Garden was a definite highlight of Munich specifically, and weekends spent hiking in the German/Austrian Alps would be the best part of living in Munich.

Uni Life
The exchange and Erasmus community was thriving, with regular social events and trips away. Meeting the local students was done through classes where groups were formed randomly, and through lectures, where I met a number of local students.

The classes had between 2 and 3 contact hours per week, and were generally in a lecture format, with a single final exam.

There are so many things to try, but an important part of Bavarian culture is visiting different breweries, beer halls and beer gardens.
The student accommodation was phenomenal, with the old Olympic Village being converted into student bungalows. These were self-contained, affordable, and well located.
Money Matters
It is easy to live cheaply in Europe, as food, drink and accommodation is much cheaper relative to Australia.
Getting Around
The train system is fantastic, with a train every 10 minutes from a station that was roughly 100m from my front door. The train network was perfectly adequate for getting around the city, and the extended network allowed me to travel to surrounding towns easily.

Exploring lower Bavaria in spring is ideal, as it is temperate, green, and the hiking is unreal. Travelling throughout the rest of Germany, however, was best done slightly later, as the North of Germany took a little while longer for the snow to thaw and the climate to become more welcoming.

Top Tips
Munich is a city that is not often considered a tourist city (aside from Oktoberfest), however, it has an excellent lifestyle and culture that makes living there an absolute dream.
