About

Duke University

Location
: Durham NC
Year Established: 1838
Student population: 14,900

About
A relatively young research university, Duke University consistently ranks among the best in the US. It’s famous for its professional schools in business, divinity, engineering, the environment, law, medicine, nursing and public policy. It’s located in Durham, a city of about 200,000 people, and many students are closely engaged with the local community.

Highlights
The main campus is located on nearly 9,000 acres. It features a historic chapel, a number of competitive sports teams, beautiful gardens, an art museum, marine laboratory, forest and the Duke Lemur Center which houses the world’s largest colony of endangered primates including more than 200 lemurs, bush babies and lorises. International students are housed on campus, sharing with US roommates.

Unique characteristics
Duke Law School is an innovative, ambitious faculty that has seen recent expansions in its academics, clinics, interdisciplinary centres, law journals, public interest opportunities, and high-tech facilities. According to the American Bar Association, it has the strongest student culture of any university in the US.

Location
Durham, known as the “Bull City” after a famous 1850s tobacco brand, offers natural beauty, a relatively low cost of living, great weather and easy access to the mountains and coast. It’s been branded variously as America’s most tolerant city, foodiest and brainiest town and the greatest basketball city to visit – it’s the home of the Durham Bulls, immortalised in the Kevin Costner film Bull Durham.
