Considered Canada’s most beautiful campus, the University of Western Ontario, commonly known as Western, is a publicly funded research university located in London, Ontario.
Western offers scores of subjects and has four main fields of study and research: life sciences and the human condition, the human and physical environments and social trends, culture analysis and values, public policy, and economic activity. The university is divided into 12 faculties and schools. The Faculty of Science is one of the largest in Canada, with more than 6,000 undergraduates, 550 graduates and a staff of 240.
Unique Characteristics
Research regarding the human brain has, in recent years, become a major focus of university activity. It has set up the Brain and Mind Institute to provide a focus for research in cognitive neuroscience. In 2014, Western also announced plans for a new state-of-the-art facility designed to place its researchers on the cutting edge of medicine, science and technology in the study of HIV and other human pathogens.
London bears little resemblance to its British namesake. Located in southwestern Ontario, it is a modern, mid-sized city and its large student population ensures a young, upbeat vibe. In fact, at the end of summer before term begins, one of its main streets, Richmond Row, is referred to as “party central.” Summer is pleasant for sports other outdoor activities, but the city receives heavy snowfall in winter.
