Program Description:

Universität Basel
Basel, Switzerland
Year Established: 1460
Student Population: 12,600
Universität Basel, or the University of Basel, is considered to be one of the leading universities in Switzerland. It is also the oldest. It is located in the German speaking part of the country.
The University of Basel defines its thematic priorities as life sciences, image sciences, nano sciences, sustainability and energy research and European and global studies. Over the course of the centuries, many scholars came to the city and the Basel Library was founded as part of the University. Today it contains more than three million books and writings and is the largest library in Switzerland.
Unique Characteristics
Students can choose from theology, law, medicine, humanities, science, business and economics and psychology. Humanities and Science are Basel’s largest faculties. Around one quarter of students and doctoral students come from abroad, comprising around 3,000 students from 114 countries. Postgraduate coursework in agriculture and the environment is also offered.
Set alongside the famous Rhine River and boasting one of Europe’s best winter carnivals, Basel is ideal for lovers of art and contemporary design. Its museums house huge and rare art collections. Among them is the unique Museum Jean Tinguely. Built by architect Mario Botto, it showcases the whacky and mischievous creations of sculptor-turned mad scientist Jean Tinguely.
