Year Established: 1973
Student population: 16,500

About
University of Tsukuba is a comprehensive research university north of Tokyo. Rather than focusing on specialised fields, as is traditional among Japanese universities, Tsukuba has opened its doors to students from both within Japan and internationally. The University has produced several Nobel laureates, Olympic gold medalists and the ‘Father of Judo’, Dr Jigoro Kano.

Highlights
The University of Tsukuba offers many research facilities including a marine centre and several laboratory schools. There are several student organisations and sporting teams. You will have the opportunity to learn Japanese while studying in English. The University has sent over 60 athletes to the Olympics and specialises in the martial arts. As well as judo, you can receive instruction in taiko drumming, shamisen, Japanese calligraphy or the tea ceremony.

Unique characteristics
Postgraduate studies in Art and Design offer a wide spectrum, from theoretical studies to the production of art work. Subjects span History of Art, Nihonga (Japanese style painting), Sho-Calligraphy Art, Carving and Modelling, Plastic Art and Mixed Media, Visual Communication Design, Environmental Design and Architectural Design.

Location
The campus is located about 45 minutes north of Tokyo. It’s Japan’s largest and most beautiful campus, and is surrounded by many government industrial research institutes. The university is a core part of Tsukuba Science City and has beautiful natural surroundings.
