Program Description:

Kyoto City University of Arts

Location: Kyoto
Year Established: 1880

Kyoto City University of Arts is Japan’s oldest arts university and has produced many artists who have become leading figures in both Japanese and contemporary art. It also has a Faculty of Music, which celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2015.

The University’s Faculty of Fine Arts offers studies in traditional Japanese painting, contemporary painting, sculpture, printmaking, concept and media planning, crafts and visual design, among others. The Faculty of Music teaches composition, conducting, piano, strings, brass, woodwind, percussion and musicology.

Unique Characteristics
Kyoto City University of Arts accepts international students but not for degree courses. Its graduates over the years have included 16 recipients of the Order of Culture, 24 members of the Japan Art Academy, and 10 artists who have been designated “living national treasures.”

Kyoto is the perfect city for the study of art and music. The city is famous for its culture and epitomizes ancient Japan, abundant in temples, shrines and beautiful gardens. It has hundreds of restaurants and is famed for its food. There are almost 1,000 Buddhist temples in the city, which is also known for its friendliness.
